Berteru Riserva Cannonau di Sardegna DOC 2021 Gungui
A very successful riserva from the typical Sardinian variety Cannonau, produced in an ultra-limited amount of 1327 bottles in the micro-winery of Luca Gungui. The vineyards where it grows are located in the renowned area near the village of Mamoiada in Sardinia at an altitude of around 700 m above sea level. Thanks to this, this riserva is not only full and elegant but also unusually fresh. Luca Gungui
In his tiny winery, Luca Gungui follows the motto "less is more," and the result is definitely worth it. Near the renowned wine village of Mamoiada in central Sardinia, he cultivates just under 3 hectares of vineyards, some of which are up to 60 years old. He named his wine series Berteru, which means sincere in the local dialect. And that's exactly what Luca and his wines are. From the very beginning, he has been farming organically, without irrigation, treating the vines only with natural methods and only when really necessary. Native yeasts, absence of filtration, and a minimum of sulfites are a given. Luca focuses on the traditional local variety Cannonau, which in his version boasts higher acidity and unusual freshness. The vineyards' location at altitudes of 600–730 m above sea level and the associated large temperature differences between day and night, which the vines have to endure, are key factors. Harvesting is done by hand, and the entire vinification process has a "family" spirit. Imagine that Luca even made his first vintage in his dad's garage! Since then, he has moved up several levels, but the total annual production remains very limited, around 10,000 bottles, which are hand-numbered.
